Self-Cleaning Glass
The world’s first self-cleaning glass

What makes Pilkington Activ™ so effective?

  • The coating uses the UV in daylight to break down and loosen dirt.

  • It also makes rainwater sheet down the glass, washing the loosened dirt away.

  • Works both on cloudy days and during the night.

  • Reduces cleaning and maintenance costs, and gives windows a better appearance.

  • Can be combined with other Pilkington glass products to offer a wide range of additional benefits

  • One of the greatest benefits of Pilkington Activ™ is it’s ability to stay clean in difficult to reach locations – especially roofs and canopies.  Key to the product’s success in these applications is the fact that it can be toughened and laminated to meet all safety requirements (complying with Part K of the Building Regulations).  With the new combinations now available – particularly Pilkington Activ Suncool™ - this promises to be a growing area for self-cleaning glass.

Activ™ keeps pool owner in the swim

  • This pool house at a luxury home in France remains one of the best examples of a Pilkington Activ™ installation.  The owner already had the design when Pilkington Activ™ was launched in 2002, but realised the potential benefits of the glass in time to incorporate it into the custom-built structure.  Just as important a consideration as self-cleaning were safety and security, which meant all of the 4mm thick panes of Pilkington Activ™ had to be toughened.

  • With 200m2 of glass, the pool house – designed to retract during warm weather – would have presented a formidable cleaning task.  As it is, Pilkington Activ™ has reduced this to an occasional hosing down during dry weather.  The owner is delighted with the results – not only is the pool house kept in pristine condition, but more time is spent concentrating on swimming rather than cleaning!

Frequently Asked Questions:

Were real life tests carried out on Pilkington Activ™
before it was released?
Yes, glass was installed and monitored at various locations round the world.  These were chosen to test the glass under a variety of weather conditions.  The glass was tested for six months in the Arizona Desert, six months in Florida, twelve months in Ohio in the USA, twelve months in Gelsenkirchen in Germany and thirty months outside our Technology Centre in the north west of England.

What were the results of the real life test? The longest real life test was in the north west of England and lasted thirty months.  During that time, measurements of how dirty the glass looked were taken every two weeks.  During the thirty months, there was only one occasion when the Pilkington Activ™ looked dirtier than the normal glass.
